Blue Rebellion is a multimedia project that tells the story of indigo - an indigenous product of Bengal, its colonial past and revival in contemporary times. It highlights the artisans and local entrepreneurs trying to revive indigo as part of Bengal’s heritage. Themes include reclaiming heritage, critique of the exploitation of indigo farmers in Bengal by the British colonizers and the revival of indigo dye production through its use in sustainable/slow fashion. The exhibition will include a short-film documentary, photographs and artwork as well as an original textile collection.
The goal of this project is to recognize the arduous efforts and labor of artisans of indigo revival, ignite an interest in this ancient tradition and how it can be promoted using sustainable methods in the production of slow fashion. It is a celebration of this important artisanal craft that exists at the intersection of indigenous expression and colonial legacy.
BLUE REBELLION
Exhibition will include a showcasing of original textile collection of contemporary designs by the artist displayed through mannequins, photographs, and videos along with time-based media that features the craftsmen community.
The portraits combine the themes of history, reclaiming heritage and what can be done to keep this heritage alive through show fashion. It is a counter narrative of traditional Victorian portraits that have always shown the British and European colonizer wearing clothes made by native artisans of the colonized regions in this case, Bengal. It is a reimagined representation.
The time-based media will feature a 10-minute documentary clip highlighting video potraits of people who are currently involved in the movement to revive indigo dye and indigo dyed products in Bangladesh.
The textile collection consists of 10-12 pieces designed by the artist (Mehvish Ali), to give an idea of how natural indigo dye and handloom fabrics can be showcased as sustainable/slow fashion.
The aim is to create a unique sensory experience through an ambience of mystery and romance associated with indigo.
